Camino Norte, day 11, Avile
Due to time constraints, and our goal to walk the last 100 km, we rented a car and headed to the furthest town where there was an Avis dealship. That town was Avile, a town of 78,000, with roots in prehistoric times, recognized in as the premier Asturian port by Alfonso III in 905 AD. Many ships were built in Avile for the Great Invincible Fleet (Spanish Armada) in 1588.
The industrial part of town was not that interesting, but we soon were in the old town, where our hotel was. We were in the Hotel Don Pedro, on the right in the picture below. The hotel is named after Don Pedro Menendez de Aviles, a mariner from Aviles and founder of St. Augustine in Florida.
